Japanese traditional dance is an independent art form stemming from the dance-drama of Kabuki, and thus cannot be separated from it. Ukiyo-e not only reflects the popular trends of the time but also allows us to understand how people viewed society. [ Review the old and learn the new ]Therefore, I continue to introduce Japan's unique traditions through videos and blogs, based on this historical context.

This time, please enjoy the work of an artist known as 'the country of warriors, Kuniyoshi,' who was not only skilled in beautiful women paintings but also excelled in depicting scenes from Kabuki.

 Kuniyoshi's SpiritArtists

writers, craftsmen, and common people vs. the austere policies imposed by the Edo governmentAgainst the tyrannical policies, which banned everything from paintings to rakugo to theater, geisha entertainment, and even watermelon as "luxurious!", the common people were understandably furious. The luxury prohibition orderWhile it might have been inevitable regarding luxury, the reasoning behind banning theater and rakugo is hard to comprehend."Even those without power, the common people, will not remain silent when faced with unreasonable demands!"Writers wrote in their books, and painters like Utamaro continued to challenge the authorities through their art. The common people responded by watching, reading, and applauding.

On October 2, 1855 (Ansei 2), a major disaster struck the Kanto region due to the Ansei Great Earthquake!Kuniyoshi published the "Ansei Chronicle" six months after the earthquake. Despite suffering from a cerebral hemorrhage and cerebral infarction, he was motivated. He, along with fellow artists and writers, documented the damage at that time and the cases where people died due to mistaken evacuations. They published a book to ensure that people would not make the same mistakes again and lose their lives.

"People today have become so accustomed to the peaceful era that they take the stories of the past lightly. However, they must understand the value of peace."

Kuniyoshi emphasized the importance of learning from the past. Someone with life experience would probably agree with this, even if they are from the present, right?"Having become complacent in a peaceful era, they disregard the old..." Even now, there are probably many such people.

"If it's new, I'll jump on it." This tends to be the case for anyone when they have little life experience. However, "...that wasn't always a good thing." As one grows older, "the meaning becomes clearer through tradition and history." Thus, adults have continued to pass down their knowledge to the younger generations who only know the present. And now we are here.

I believe that today's children are increasingly listening to and understanding the opinions of adults. A trend that did not exist in the bubble generation.

Perhaps this is one advantage in a recessionary society.

"In the 'Ansei Kenbunroku',

it was written about how the gates of Edo Castle were destroyed by an earthquake. The shogunate, which took offense at this, imposed a ban on publication!

This happened just two months after its release. However, primarily the disciples of Kuniyoshi continued to express their dissent against the shogunate through satirical paintings.

The resolute disciples of a resolute master, trustworthy men who emulated his spirit. How delightful it is!

Even women have fortitude.

It is not enough to merely possess a good spirit; one should make good use of it!"
