木戸番など番所のガードマンが営業してたのね

自身番は、名の通り、自警団

初めは、町の家持ち大家たちが 番小屋＝番所を建てて、

持ち回りで警備にあたった

そのうち、番所に詰める人を 町が雇ったそう

（時代劇では、引退した岡っ引きなどが なってますね）

彼らは ギャラが高くない代わりに 副業OK だったので、

冬は 皆が大好きな 焼き芋屋さん！

江戸時代の就職は、多く奉公でした
その商家か、親方の家に同居して働く（定休日なんぞ無し！）
お盆と正月、薮入りだけが休み

親元を離れて、１スタッフ見習いとして生きた子は沢山いたの
この絵の子が、この後、焼き芋を買ってもらってたら ええねぇ
そして、仕事を覚えて番頭さんや、独立などなど立派になってそうです

In the ukiyo-e, a child is removing the snow stuck in the lady's geta sandals. Could this child have come from the countryside to serve as an apprentice? Or maybe they are accompanying the proprietress on her outing.

During the Edo period, employment often followed a live-in apprenticeship system. They would live and work in a merchant’s or master’s house.

No regular days off! Only summer and New Year were breaks. In the past, many children lived away from their homes and survived as apprentice staff.

You’d like to think that this child in the picture got to buy some roasted sweet potatoes afterward, wouldn’t you?

「初雪や これも人の子 樽拾い　沾徳」

沾徳さんの詳細は存じませんが、この句にはグッときます

雪の中、得意先から空になった桶を集めて回る小さな子を見た

「ほんの子供が、こんな寒い中を・・・」　思いやり・情が生んだ句

沾徳さんの師は、奥州磐城平城主である内藤風虎の次男

（師のパパ 風虎の俳席は 門流にかかわらず広く開かれ，

江戸初期の俳壇の活性化に貢献したキーパーソンの１人）

A paraphrase of the haiku:

In the falling first snow, a child goes around collecting empty barrels from customers. Even though that child is someone’s own, too—such is the unfairness of the world.

And when this kid learns the job and the store is up and running, they seem likely to become a manager or even go independent, turning out well.

寒いのは苦手ですが 、冬の、酷暑にはない風情は良いなぁ

The Edo period is said to have been during the Little Ice Age.

There are many expressions of snow in lyrics, tanka, haiku, senryu, and dialogue.

小唄

「初雪に振り込められて向島  二人が中に置きごたつ」

　（初雪が積もるとは、さすが小氷河期！）

どどいつ

「下駄の歯形に 未練を残す つらい別れの 雪の朝」

「月落鳥（カラス）が鳴こうとままよ 帰しゃせぬぞえ 今朝の雪」

芸者と愛人の客とは夜明けに分かれるのが定番でしたが、

遣らずの朝雪 は恋する女たちの味方になったようです

俳句

「窓銭の 浮世をはなす 雪見かな　其角」

（江戸では窓の数税があったそうで、ｾﾁｶﾞﾗ〜）

「いざ雪見 形作りす（格好を整える） 簑と笠   蕪村」

「雪おろし 都の雨夜なつかしき   玉宇」

「雪晴れの障子 細めに慈眼（慈悲深い眼差し）かな　茅舎」

川柳

「雀形 たたいて雪の注進し」

（吉原マークである雀柄のついたてを叩いて、禿ちゃんが花魁に「雪だ！」と喜んで教えてる）
